Designing the future traditions of southwest Florida, today.

...but what about the club room?
Seeing the potential to revitalize the club room, an underutilized space with a beautiful bank of windows, McWard Architects gave attention to a axial alignment between the existing club room, the new pool, and the new cabana bar in the NHGCC campus development plan.  This gave a previously underutilized space, one of the best views in the house.

FLA's interior design concept and configuration of a lounge area within the club room, honors by integration, the aforementioned architectural endeavor.  By utilizing a centroidal axis and symmetrical alignment, the above diagram illustrates a small but important example of identifying opportunities to facilitate the unification of the architecture and interior design on multiple scales. Regarding design and planning F L A believes that this practice yields the most desirable results.

Interior Design

Before going into private practice, Mrs. Orion worked at McWard Architects with a primary focus of large scale golf and country club projects throughout the Naples area, including, Naples Heritage’s Golf and Country Club (NHGCC).

Mrs. Orion worked granularly on the architectural and planning side of the NHGCC multi-year campus development project.  Upon opening her own practice Mrs. Orion is delighted to have had Form Light Architects selected to continue on the project team and work the designing and planning minutiae of the interior design services required to finish the club's project, on time and on budget, Fall 2020.

While at McWard Architects, one of the skills Mrs. Orion provided was technological. In so doing she would translate the principal architects’ vision for their client’s projects into a digital 3-dimensional format.

Incorporating this method of visual communication and information modeling into the architectural process provides the architect and client with a framework that can be easily understood, quickly revised, and comprehensively analyzed for effective and optimized results.

As part of our creative process, FLA engages a series of iterative diagramming techniques  to analyze a full spectrum of design, and building science parameters.  This is a methodical exercise used to identify aspects of the project that can be fleshed out to exceed client expectations as well as foresee potential conflicts.

Due to the heavy solar thermal loads present in Florida, Form and Light Architects recommends using a roofing material that has both a high albedo and a high emissivity. Albedo is measured on a scale of 0-1 and identifies the portion of solar radiation that is reflected by a surface. An albedo of 0 represents an absorptive body while an albedo of 1 corresponds to a body that reflects all incident of radiation. Emissivity, also measured on a scale of 0-1, is the value given to materials based on its effectiveness in emitting energy as thermal radiation.
form follows physics.
FLA chose a silver standing metal seam roof for the pictured Sarasota, FL home’s facade and exterior renovation. When properly specified, a standing seam metal roof can provide a surface that reflects solar radiation away from the home. Additionally, the material properties of this roofing system will allow any heat that does get absorbed to be radiated back into the atmosphere, rather than stored within the material on the roof. This all adds up to a reduced thermal loading on the building, a more efficient HVAC system and annual savings via reduced energy bills. Another benefit of a standing seam metal roofing system in Florida, is its systematic assembly. This quality is desirable when trying to mitigate high velocity winds in a hurricane. By contrast, each of the individual tiles in a concrete tile roofing system are more vulnerable to becoming a projectile. Additionally, due to the high latent heat in our area, porous concrete tiles are more susceptible to water absorption and retention. Regarding the color selection of the home Form and Light Architects again recommends deferring to the identification of a color with a high albedo to reduce thermal loading on the building. Although the roof receives the most solar energy of any surface of a house, in Florida, all surfaces require careful consideration when analyzing the impacts of thermal loading.

Now that many people are working and educating their children from home, home has taken on a new meaning.  With the E & P residence we used the existing sofas as a base to refresh and enliven the great room and living room.  For this young family it was a priority to make sure the project was tailored to their budget and timeline to impose only a minimal disruption on the family flow.
